Vitamin C Rocket

Introduction
The Vitamin C Rocket is a brilliant way in which to get children involved in the world of science and helps develop their powers of observation and investigation.
Project Overview
Target Population
Boys and girls aged 5 years to 12 years old
Goals and Learning Objectives
This is a very successful way in which to teach children how to harness their creativity, develop their powers of observation, use their senses and developing their ability to communicate
Project Time
2 hours one day per week
Project Duration
September to December or January to June
Setting
Room required – Make sure that the rocket (canister) is not pointing at anyone and that no-one is too close to it. Safety glasses (such as sun glasses, swimming goggles etc) should be worn. Make sure that any spilt water is mopped up off the floor.
Equipment
A film canister or Vitamin C canister, Half a fizzy tablet, such as alkaseltzer or Vit C, Water
Tutor Requirements
One or two trained facilitators
Tutor Skill
Experienced working with young children, science and creative workshops
How to
- Put in the half tablet and a table spoon of water
- Put the lid on tightly and shake.
- Place lid end down on a table and wait.
- The bubbles emitted are trapped; this means that the pressure will build up due to the many molecules hitting the sides.
- After a short while the pressure becomes so great the frictional forces keeping the on are overcome and the gas pressure forces the lid and the canister to separate.
- The canister is projected upwards with a loud pop.
- Try out different sized pieces of tablet and predict which one will go off first.
Project Outcome
It proved to be extremely successful in getting children to develop their understanding of science swell as exploring, predicting and experimenting.
